There are some advantages to getting older. Aching joints might not be one of them, however if you are retired or over 65 and live in Andalucia, apart from probably having less achy joints, you also qualify for useful discount schemes for retirees.

Tarjeta Sesenta y Cinco Discount Scheme for Retirees

The ‘Tarjeta Sesenta y Cinco’ is a card for over 65’s as part of a scheme run by the Junta de Andalucia.  It´s free and enables those eligible to easily access direct benefits and social services as well as discounts, grants and access to various senior resident programs. For example:

• Discounts on bus travel for all journeys within Andalucia
• Up to 55% off hearing aids or glasses.
• Discounts on hotel prices, cinema tickets, visits to theme parks
• Reduced entry to historic sites museums and monuments around Andalucia
• Subsidies for home improvements such as ramps and handrails.

The card is only issued to residents , so you will need to have your residencia certificate or card in order to apply.

If you have a digital certificate, you can apply for the card online. If not, you can do it the old fashioned way by printing off and filling in a form and presenting it at the relevant local Junta de Andalucia department.

Tarjeta Dorada Train Travel Discount Scheme for Retirees

Also for those over 60, there is a train travel discount scheme. Renfe, the national train service, issue a card known as the “Tarjeta Dorada”, or Gold Card, which offers various generous discounts on train travel- such as  you are entitled to a discount of 40% off all train fares from Monday to Thursday and a further 25% off, if you book your ticket in advance.
