Countdown to Brexit:
Getting Spanish Residency used to be a basic paperwork exercise for Brits settling in Spain. It is not so straight forward now, and with little time to go before Brexit, getting Spanish residency has become an urgent necessity.
The UK Government has implemented measures to prepare for crashing out of the EU. The EU has answered back with details of its own preparations, mentioning amongst others, restrictions on flights and citing rules on ‘right to enter reside and work in EU Member States’. These rules will restrict UK nationals if they don’t have certified residency.
The default position of UK nationals in Spain in a no deal Brexit scenario, is to fall into the same category as any other non EU citizen, e.g. USA, China, Russia etc. Visits will be limited to 3 months in any 6 month period.
The stated intent on both sides, (deal or no deal), is to preserve rights of residency for existing lawful (certified) residents. So for any UK national wishing to secure a right to reside in Spain after Brexit, getting Spanish Residency is essential.
Getting Spanish Residency is Now Urgent
Residency appointments are in demand. In many places, slots are booked up 3 to 4 weeks ahead, and when new appointments are released they get snapped up fast. The authorities have also reacted to the recent surge in residency applications from Brits, and checks are now a lot more stringent. This in most cases means more supporting information required, and therefore more time needed obtaining and gathering proof documents. Or if your aren’t properly prepared, a greater chance of getting knocked back.
For example, when bank records are being used to prove financial means of support, an average balance statement is now required. A bank certificate simply showing a sufficient minimum amount of money in your account, is no longer accepted. They want to see where money is coming from and how frequently.
Getting your Spanish Residency before Brexit
Obtaining proof documents for your residency application, and getting them translated can take days, but can sometimes take weeks. There are only weeks left now before Brexit.
Anyone from the UK who hasn’t yet obtained their residency certificate, who wants to continue to do so after Brexit, is well advised to waste no time and start the process now.
