As in the UK, Spain has a system to identify and recognise Classic Cars. Under Spanish rules, cars that meet the various criteria, can achieve the status of being of ‘historical’ and registered as Classic Car with ‘historical’ licence plates.
The main identifying criteria is the age of the car. For many years the defining age has been 25 years. So any car that age, or older, could be registered as a ‘historical’ vehicle, and the owner could enjoy the kudos of having their beloved motor officially recognised and adorned with ‘H’ plates. Historical status for a Classic Car in Spain, also brings with the added perks of cheaper insurance, longer gaps between ITV´s and road tax exemption.
The age criteria has been changed with legislation that will come into effect in May 2018, raising the defining age for a Classic Car to be deemed ‘historical’ from 25 years to 30 years.
This change is not retrospective. Therefore, if your Classic Car is 27 years old and is already registered as ‘historical’, it won’t overnight lose its status. We haven’t however as yet been able to get clarification from the authorities, as to if you have already started the process to register you Classic Car as ‘historical’, and it doesn’t meet the new age criteria, whether you will be able to complete the process. I.e. if your Classic Car is less than 30 years old, as long as you’ve started the process before the change comes into effect, it can be registered even if the process isn’t completed until after May, does the process have to be fully completed before the change.
We will update this article as soon as we have had this clarified.
In the meantime, if you are the owner of a Classic Car in Spain that is less than 30 years old, and are considering getting it registered as ‘historical’, we recommend that you get started straight away, as in a few weeks time you may need to wait a few more years for your ‘historical’ plates.
Whilst in most cases age will be the determining factor for a vehicle to achieving ‘historical’ status, there are other a vehicle could make the grade, e.g. if it is listed in the Spanish Register of Heritage Cars, or if it is of cultural interest due to rarity or it’s association with a specific event.
In all cases when applying for ‘historical’ status for a Classic Car, each application is a world unto itself and it’s important that you know what you’re doing, or employ someone who does.
